Ways Your Toddler Can Help Prepare for Christmas
The holiday season, especially around Christmas time, is often a busy time for just about everyone. Yet our toddlers have so many opportunities to help prepare for Christmas. I want to share with you some fun and unique ways to get your toddler involved in the hustle and bustle of the season that will help your whole family slow down.
In the Kitchen
Lots of things happen in the kitchen this time of year! My boys love working in the kitchen and find so much joy in the little tasks. We can prepare our kitchen with tools like a learning tower, to make this work safe and very accessible to them. Also, check out this list of functional kitchen tools for your child. Here are some ways that your toddler can help out in the kitchen for Christmas.
- Measuring and dumping ingredients into a bowl
- Mixing
- Peeling vegetables with a child-safe peeler
- Rolling and cutting out out cookie dough
- Frosting cookies
- Making orange juice for Christmas breakfast
- Sweeping

Around the House
A lot of work has to be done often to prepare the home for Christmas. These are some of the things we will get our boys involved in around the house to decorate for Christmas. Toddlers thrive when they have purposeful and meaningful work. Preparing the home beautifully for the Christmas season is a great opportunity for a toddler to help.
- Hanging ornaments on the tree
- Pushing buckets with decorations around the house (great heavy work opportunities)
- Putting lights in the windows
- Setting up the Nativity scene
- Setting out books for our Advent book calendar (get all the details here!)
- Making Christmas cards
- Putting stamps on envelopes for mailing Christmas cards
- Placing Christmas cards into the mailbox
- Hanging up the stockings
- Watering the Christmas tree

For Others
This is a time to be thinking of giving to others. We can help our toddlers to do this with a few simple actions. As we prepare to show love and kindness to the other members of our family and community, we can invite our child to join us in these thoughtful tasks.
- Making cards for others
- Going out to a store to buy a gift for someone
- Making a meal for a family
