Fire Truck Gift Guide with 10+ Ideas Your Little Firefighter Will Love
My twins are turning 4, and there was zero debate about the birthday theme this year — it’s firefighters and fire trucks (for one of the twins! Check out this post for what to get a child who loves the ambulance. If you’re in the same boat (or you’re shopping for a firefighter-obsessed child in your life), I’ve put together this list of the best firefighter birthday gift ideas we’re gifting this year. These are gifts that will be exciting to open but also bring value and real play into your home. I’ve categorized them into 4 categories: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read.
Why Firefighter Gifts Are a Hit at This Age
My boys are turning four, and I am seeing what a fun age this is for leaning into a themed gift like firefighters and fire trucks (or ambulances). I know they will love these toys and accessories, and I love that it will help them dive into play while still focusing on real-life skills along the way!
Let’s dive into what I’ll be wrapping up this year for my son, who loves fire trucks and firefighters!
Something to Wear (and Something They Need)
We want to offer opportunities for our children’s imaginations to come alive! When giving gifts, I also want them to be practical, so I’ve sprinkled in both play-like ideas and some more practical ideas that are on-theme for this firefighter gift guide! Children are always needing new clothes, shoes, and outdoor gear, so I took this opportunity to gift some of the practical things they need.
Firefighter Costume
If you get your child a firefighter costume…they will want to wear it all the time. I know that once our twins get their emergency responder costumes (one will be a paramedic!), they will not want to take them off.
One thing to consider is the fasteners, so that your child can get in and out of the costume independently. This has been one of the reasons I have held off on buying costumes, because I know it would just be me taking them on and off. Now as they are four years old, I know they will have more success in playing with their costumes more independently.
I found a great deal on our costumes by buying second-hand on Vinted!
Firetruck Pajama’s
Nothing says a themed birthday gift better than a new cozy pair of pajamas!
Firefighter Rain Boots
I love this idea of getting a pair of rain boots to go along with the costume, but also that can be worn anytime. I went with these simple rain boots becuase I had found them thrifting, and they were the perfect size, but these adorable firefighter rain boots from Oiak are just too perfect not to mention!
Jacket or Puffy Vest
If you need to revamp your child’s winter gear, you can easily pair a new (or new to you) winter jacket or puffy vest for your child. Firefighters have to be warm too! I found this great puffy red vest on Vinted for only $5!
Something They Want
If you have a child who loves firetrucks, you’ll want to be sure to include a firetruck that they can play with. Depending on the age of the child you’re shopping for, you may determine that the Playmobil firetruck has too many small pieces and go with a simpler firetruck. However, our twins got a set of Playmobil firetrucks for their 3rd birthday, and it was a huge hit!
Playmobil Firetruck
Playmobil sets are wonderfully open-ended, and the Playmobil firetruck is probably my favorite set my children have. Our boys got the Firetruck for their 3rd birthday, but I think it would be the perfect addition to this themed gift guide. I love how kids can use these toys to live out something they see and know from their real life.
If Playmobil has too many little pieces, consider this other model of firetruck!
Walkie Talkies
A 3-pack of walkie-talkies is my favorite idea on this list! My twins will have so much fun with these, and Mom gets one too! I think this will really make their firefighter and paramedic play come alive as they can talk on the radio to one another!

Something to Read
There are so many books out there, and you could choose any number of them, but I found two that I thought would be loved by my boys. Additionally, I found a great sticker book that will encourage both fine motor control and concentration.
A Resource Book
I chose the DK Big Book of Rescue Vehicles! I loved that it had big photos of all the different rescue vehicles. I can just imagine my boys pouring over all the little details of this book and inspiring their play along the way!
A Firetruck Story Book
I chose a gentle, story-based book to balance out the nonfiction one above, what better than a Richard Scarry classic! Richard Scarry’s A Day at the Fire Station which is full of fun illustrations and tons of details to look at and enjoy!
Sticker Book
An easy, low-mess activity for car rides, waiting rooms, or a rainy afternoon — and it keeps the theme going without needing more toys on the floor. I’m excited for the boys to work with this!
A Few More Firefighter Birthday Gift Ideas
If you’re shopping for a firefighter birthday and want a few more options beyond what’s on our own list here are a few more ideas to get you thinking
- A firetruck-shaped puzzle
- A firefighter helmet (if the costume doesn’t already include one)
- A firetruck lunchbox or water bottle
Tips for Choosing a Firefighter Gift Your Kid Will Actually Use
I put together this Firefighter and firetruck gift guide for the very purpose of giving a gift that has variety. You want elements of fun playful toys, practical things (like rain boots or a new pair of pajamas) and then those gifts that help slow it all down like a good book or puzzle.
TIPS:
- Mix categories; don’t just give toys. A costume, a book, and one solid toy (like the Playmobil set) will get more play than five smaller toys that all do the same thing.
- Choose open-ended over single-use. Toys that can be played with in more than one way will have longevity in your household, leading to less stuff and better play!
FAQ: Firefighter Birthday Gift Ideas
What is a good main gift for a firefighter birthday theme? A Playmobil or another style of fire truck set is a great central gift — it’s open-ended, holds up over time, and pairs well with smaller theme items like books or a costume.
What are good small or stocking-stuffer-style firefighter gifts? A sticker book, walkie-talkies, or fire truck pajamas are all great smaller additions that don’t need to be the main event.
Are firefighter gifts good for kids younger or older than 4? Yes! Our boys loved the fire trucks and firefighters last year for their third birthday, there will be even more they can use and play with this year as 4-year-olds. You’ll just want to size costumes and choose age-appropriate small parts for younger kids.
